ECHR Judges’ Election Committee Recommends Margarita Papantoniou for Cyprus

Paris: The Committee on the Election of Judges to the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) has recommended, by majority, Margarita Papantoniou as the most suitable candidate to serve as judge of the Court on behalf of the Republic of Cyprus.

According to Cyprus News Agency, the next PACE Session, during which the election of the Cypriot judge is expected to take place, will be held on September 29-30. A meeting took place in Paris on 15 September 2025, under the chairmanship of Austrian MP Petra Bayr, where the Committee reviewed the files of the candidates submitted by Cyprus and conducted interviews with all nominees.

The list submitted by the Republic of Cyprus included Elena Efrem, Natasa Mavronicola, and Margarita Papantoniou. Following the conclusion of the process, the Committee recommended Papantoniou to PACE as the most qualified choice for the post. The other candidates are also listed in order of preference and are included on the final ballot.

PACE, considering the Committee’s recommendation, is expected to proceed with the election of the new judge, who will represent Cyprus in Strasbourg for a non-renewable nine-year term. All 306 full members of PACE are eligible to vote on the first day of the session. If participation is insufficient, the vote will continue the second day.
