Drug shortage to be resolved soon, Health Minister says

Minister of Health Michalis Damianos said on Friday that until the beginning of next week, the Ministry will have solved the drugs shortage, adding that they are in contact with the Greek authorities.

The Minister, who inaugurated the Hemodialysis Unit at Saint George Private Hospital in Paphos, was asked by journalists about the lack of medicines and his consultations with Greece. Damianos said that there was a communication yesterday with the authorities in Greece, such as with the Deputy Minister of Health adding that the problem will be solved either today or early next week.

The Minister of Health noted that the problem that Cyprus faces as a small country within the EU is that it is not “attractive to the pharmaceutical industry, so there are both shortages and differences in the price of drugs”.

“It is a problem faced by all small countries within the EU, small like Cyprus and a little bigger as well, we are trying within the EU to find a solution” , he added.

The Minister went on to say that it is
unfair for a small country to pay much more for medicines than a larger country and added that this is an issue that needs a collective approach, in the context of the EU.
