Defence Minister to Discuss Assistance with German Counterpart Amid Rising Tensions

Nicosia: Minister of Defence, Vasilis Palmas, will contact his German counterpart on Wednesday to discuss assistance for Cyprus in defending against possible threats following the USA-Israel war against Iran. Government Spokesperson, Konstantinos Letymbiotis, stated on Tuesday that President of the Republic, Nikos Christodoulides, and German Chancellor, Friedrich Merz, have already deliberated on precautionary measures, which have been assessed by the armed forces of both countries at an operational level.

According to Cyprus News Agency, Letymbiotis also mentioned that President Christodoulides, as part of ongoing diplomatic efforts, held a telephone conversation with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer concerning the measures being implemented at the British Sovereign Bases in Cyprus following a drone attack in Akrotiri. Prime Minister Starmer informed President Christodoulides that a warship is set to arrive in Cyprus.

In response to inquiries about the potential reexamination of the status of the British Sovereign Bases, Letymbiotis stated that the Republic of Cyprus has communicated its stance to the UK, which has been respected. He emphasized that the current priority for the government is coordination with the UK and the British Bases.

Letymbiotis further noted that the duration of the precautionary measures and assistance from other countries, including Greece and France, will persist as long as necessary, depending on the ongoing evaluation of the situation.
