Minister of Defence Charalambos Petrides focused on the friendship ties with Israel and condemned the Russian invasion of Ukraine during a ceremony marking the 73rd anniversary of the closure of the Jewish refugee detention camps held on Monday 28 February in Nicosia.
In his speech, Petrides said that the monument to the Jewish Holocaust survivors who came to Cyprus after World War II on their way to Israel is “a testament to the long-standing friendship between Cyprus and Israel and the people to people ties that were forged in the period 1946-1949,” adding that “the presence of more than 50,000 Jewish refugees in Cyprus is a history that is worth to be told and to be known by younger and future generations.”
