Nicosia welcomes the agreement reached at the European Council on the 6th package of sanctions against Russia, Government Spokesperson Marios Pelekanos said on Tuesday.

“Given the need to maintain the unity and cohesion of the EU, we welcome this development that is moving in the right direction”, Pelekanos said.

He noted that the Republic of Cyprus is satisfied as important issues concerning the EU member states in relation to their financial viability have been taken into account.

The Government Spokesperson said that sanctions are an important policy tool of the European Union adding that decisions taken should be based on the guidelines which provide that these measures should be sustainable and have a much greater economic impact on the third countries concerned rather than on EU states.

He also stressed that diplomatic efforts should be intensified and strengthened to put an end to the Russian invasion of Ukraine as soon as possible, an invasion which causes the loss of innocent lives, the uprooting of millions of families from their homeland, causing a chain reaction for Europe as a whole.
