Cyprus Urges EU Involvement in Gaza Agreement Implementation

Luxembourg: Cyprus’ Foreign Minister Constantinos Kombos emphasized the necessity of the European Union’s active involvement in the implementation of the Gaza agreement during the Foreign Affairs Council (FAC) held in Luxembourg. The meeting brought together representatives from 27 member states to deliberate on issues concerning Russia’s aggression against Ukraine and the ongoing situation in the Middle East. Highlighting Cyprus’ commitment, Kombos asserted the nation’s steadfast presence through the maritime humanitarian corridor.

According to Cyprus News Agency, the foreign ministers engaged in an informal working breakfast before the official commencement of the Council’s proceedings, focusing on refining the FAC’s working methods. During the session dedicated to Ukraine, Kombos reiterated Cyprus’ call for an unconditional and complete ceasefire, which he believes is essential for initiating negotiations aimed at achieving lasting peace in the region. He also underscored Cyprus’ support for the prompt adoption of the 19th sanctions package targeting the shadow fleet.

Addressing the Middle East, Kombos urged the EU to play a proactive role in implementing the recent Gaza agreement. He noted Cyprus’ strategic position as the EU member state closest to the region, emphasizing its continuous presence through the maritime humanitarian corridor. Kombos highlighted Cyprus’ strong relations with regional countries and expressed readiness to further contribute to security, reconstruction, and humanitarian aid initiatives.

The Foreign Minister also referenced recent diplomatic engagements by the President of the Republic during the Summit for Peace in Egypt. He pointed out specific areas where Cyprus can initiate concrete projects to enhance security and humanitarian support in the region.

In light of the election of the new Turkish Cypriot leader, Tufan Erhrman, Kombos reaffirmed Cyprus’ commitment to resuming negotiations to resolve the Cyprus issue. He stressed that any solution must align with UN resolutions and EU principles and legislation.

Following the FAC, Kombos is also participating in the Meeting on Regional Security and Connectivity. This meeting involves foreign ministers from EU member states and partner countries from the Eastern Partnership, the Black Sea region, and Central Asia, focusing on energy, transport, and maritime management.

Cyprus has remained divided since 1974, following Turkey’s invasion and occupation of its northern third. Despite numerous UN-led peace talks, a resolution has yet to be achieved, with the last negotiations in July 2017 at the Swiss resort of Crans-Montana ending without an agreement.
