Nicosia: Cyprus has launched the ‘Digital Citizen’ application, which has been developed following the standards of Greece’s ‘Gov.gr Wallet’. The application is now available for download on Google Play and the App Store as announced by the Deputy Ministry of Research, Innovation and Digital Policy of the Republic of Cyprus, in collaboration with the Ministry of Digital Governance of Greece. The two applications are expected to interoperate within the first quarter of 2025.
According to Cyprus News Agency, the Deputy Ministry of Research, Innovation and Digital Policy of the Republic of Cyprus and the Ministry of Digital Governance of Greece released a joint statement emphasizing the deepening partnership between the two countries in digital transformation. The ‘Digital Citizen’ application aims to facilitate citizens by providing digital services and identification, and it was developed following a memorandum of understanding between the two ministries. This agreement focused on exchanging best practices an
d experiences to enhance digital services.
Both the ‘Digital Citizen’ and the ‘Gov.gr Wallet’ applications are set to interoperate by early 2025, allowing for mutual recognition of digital documents between the two nations. This initiative is expected to significantly ease identification processes and transactions for citizens in both Cyprus and Greece.
Dr. Nicodemos Damianou, Cyprus’ Deputy Minister of Research, Innovation and Digital Policy, described the launch as a significant milestone in Cyprus’s journey towards digital transformation. He also highlighted the anticipated positive impact of the interoperation with Greece’s application on the citizens of both countries.
The ongoing cooperation between Cyprus and Greece was reiterated by Dr. Damianou, who mentioned plans to expand collaboration into other areas following agreements made at the recent Cyprus-Greece Intergovernmental Summit.
Dimitris Papastergiou, Greece’s Minister of Digital Governance, remarked on the ‘Digital Citizen’ as a noteworthy
result of the bilateral cooperation in digital transition. He emphasized the importance of exchanging experiences and best practices for successful digital transformation, viewing the collaboration as a model for handling complex issues at the European level to ensure optimal outcomes for citizens.
