Cyprus Universities Achieve First-Ever Athena Swan Bronze Awards

Nicosia: Four higher education institutions in Cyprus have been awarded the Athena Swan Bronze, marking the first time this honor has been granted in the country. This achievement represents a significant milestone for the international expansion of the Athena Swan Charter Framework. The recognized institutions include Frederick University, UCLan Cyprus, the University of Cyprus, and European University Cyprus, all of which demonstrated their commitment to advancing gender equality through a comprehensive self-assessment process.

According to Cyprus News Agency, the awards are the culmination of a three-year pilot project launched in September 2023, aimed at co-developing an Athena Swan framework tailored to the Cypriot higher education context. This initiative was supported by the Cyprus Agency of Quality Assurance and Accreditation in Higher Education (CYQAA) and executed in partnership with Advance HE. The project signifies a national commitment to embedding gender equality within higher education and research across Cyprus.

As part of the pilot, the institutions engaged in rigorous self-assessment, data analysis, and action planning to identify and address barriers to gender equality. This effort fostered more inclusive organizational cultures. Alistair Jarvis CBE, Chief Executive of Advance HE, expressed his satisfaction, stating, 'I am delighted to congratulate these four institutions on achieving Athena Swan Bronze Awards. This recognition reflects a significant commitment to advancing gender equality through self-assessment, institutional reflection and meaningful action.'

The Cyprus submissions highlighted several good practices, including evidence-based initiatives to address gender underrepresentation, such as targeted scholarships and outreach programs. These efforts aim to encourage greater participation in disciplines where women are underrepresented. The institutions also plan to integrate equality, diversity, and inclusion considerations within core processes like recruitment, promotion, and workload allocation, with a focus on acknowledging the impact of career breaks on career progression.

Additional commitments involve developing comprehensive institution-wide approaches to prevent and respond to harassment, discrimination, and gender-based violence. There is also an emphasis on improving EDI data infrastructure and ensuring balanced representation within governance structures and committees.

Athena Swan is a globally recognized framework established in the UK in 2005 to promote gender equality in higher education and research. It has since expanded internationally to countries such as Ireland, Australia, Canada, the United States, and India. The recent awards in Cyprus highlight the progress made by participating institutions since the pilot's launch in 2023, marking a significant step in the framework's international growth.
