Nicosia: As the Presidency of the Council of the European Union, Cyprus will work actively to ensure that the EU's support to Ukraine remains strong, united, and unwavering, President of the Republic of Cyprus Nikos Christodoulides has stressed. On a post on 'X' after hosting in Nicosia a quadrilateral meeting with the Presidents of Ukraine, the European Council, and the European Commission, the President said that the discussions focused on the latest developments and efforts towards a just, comprehensive, and lasting peace in Ukraine, in line with international law.
According to Cyprus News Agency, President Christodoulides underscored that supporting Ukraine's sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity is a top priority of Cyprus's EU Presidency. He emphasized the commitment to work collectively for peace, stability, and security in Europe. The President also expressed his dedication to ensuring that the EU's backing for Ukraine is unwavering during his term.
Following the quadrilateral meeting, the President conducted a bilateral meeting with Antonio Costa, President of the European Council. President Christodoulides indicated his anticipation for a close and productive collaboration on advancing key EU priorities. These priorities include supporting Ukraine, enhancing competitiveness and simplification, addressing the next Multiannual Financial Framework, EU enlargement, and strengthening defence and security.
The President also highlighted the importance of maintaining close coordination, especially in light of the upcoming informal European Council in Cyprus in April. He acknowledged the significance of the forthcoming joint visit by President Costa and President von der Leyen to Jordan, Syria, and Lebanon, noting that this region is a vital neighborhood for the European Union.
