Cyprus to host 2nd MED9 Energy Ministerial Summit on Monday

Cyprus will host the 2nd MED9 Energy Ministerial Summit on Monday, gathering Energy Ministers from nine Mediterranean EU countries. According to the Ministry of Energy, the summit aims to strengthen energy cooperation and promote the Mediterranean as a hub for green energy transport through discussions and the creation of synergies for cross-border renewable energy projects.

As the 2024 chair of the informal MED9 cooperation, Cyprus will hold the summit in Larnaca, under the presidency of Minister of Energy, Commerce, and Industry George Papanastasiou. The event will take place at the Radisson Blu Hotel.

Energy Ministers or their representatives from France, Greece, Italy, Spain, Croatia, Malta, Portugal, and Slovenia will participate, along with representatives from the European Commission and the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA).

The summit will be divided into three sections. The first will focus on the creation of a green energy hub in the Mediterranean, facilitating energy transport betw
een Europe and third countries. This initiative aims to help achieve energy goals, ensure security, and promote peace and stability in the broader region.

The second section will explore synergies between MED9 countries in licensing cross-border green projects, a crucial step toward realizing the shared vision of an energy hub in the Mediterranean.

A family photo of the participants will be taken at 12:15 p.m., followed by a joint press conference, where Minister Papanastasiou will present the joint declaration of the MED9 Energy Ministers.

The summit will conclude with a working lunch, where the need for a policy framework for offshore renewable energy technologies, including wind turbines, floating solar panels, and wave energy, will be discussed.
