Cyprus will host the 2024 annual meeting of the Small Countries Initiative of the European Region of the World Health Organization, following a request by the Minister of Health Dr Popi Kanari. According to a press release by the Ministry of Health, this constitutes a great honor for the Ministry, that will determine the thematic priorities for 2024. The press release says that the Minister of Health participated 11 and 12 of May in the high-level meeting of the Small Countries Initiative of the European Region of the World Health Organization on “Promoting Health and Well-being”, that took place in Luxembourg. The Minister participated in three panels that addressed issues like access to pharmaceuticals, mental health and innovation in the prevention and reduction of the impact of non transmitted diseases. Furthermore, Kanari presented actions under development for population programs regarding the early diagnosis of cancer in its early stages. A joint declaration was adopted after the meeting with multi-thematic goals that aim to strengthen the small states in health matters. The Minister also held a bilateral meeting with Dr. Hans Henri Kluge, WHO Regional Director for Europe with whom she discussed areas where the WHO could assist Cyprus.
