Nicosia: A strategic agreement between the State Health Services Organisation (OKYpY) and the University Clinic of Tubingen for the training of two Cypriot doctors in hepatology was signed in Germany on Monday. Cyprus’ Health Ministry on Monday said the signing is an ‘important step’ for the upgrading and improvement of the care of transplant patients.
According to Cyprus News Agency, the agreement, which was signed in the presence of Health Minister Michalis Damianos, provides for the training of two Cypriot doctors in hepatology with the aim of strengthening the monitoring of transplant patients without them requiring to constantly travel abroad for treatment, the Ministry said in a statement.
Damianos noted that the agreement was ‘of enormous importance’ for Cyprus and the country’s healthcare services. ‘With the training of two Cypriot doctors at the University Clinic of Tubingen, we ensure that liver transplant patients will have the opportunity, after their transplant abroad, to be monitored and recei
ve the necessary treatment from their doctors in Cyprus, without having to travel abroad for their ongoing care,’ he said.
He also stressed that the agreement ‘paves the way for closer cooperation between Cyprus and Germany in the field of hepatology and liver transplantation’. The training of the two Cypriot doctors, he added, which will last one year, is expected to resolve the issue of monitoring and care of liver transplant patients.
Damianos also noted that cooperation with leading international hospitals and the training of medical personnel was a priority for the Health Ministry, as it would contribute to the upgrading of healthcare services in Cyprus.
