Cyprus Set to Assume EU Presidency Amid Global Challenges

Nicosia: President Nikos Christodoulides expressed optimism on Tuesday that Cyprus would successfully fulfill its duties during its upcoming EU Presidency, which he described as a ‘national mission.’

According to Cyprus News Agency, President Christodoulides highlighted the significance of the impending leadership role as he responded to a journalist’s remark about the countdown for Cyprus taking over the Presidency of the Council of the EU. His comments were made during his attendance at a lunch with Ambassadors of the EU Member States, organized by the Ambassador of Denmark to celebrate the conclusion of the Danish Presidency of the Council of the EU.

President Christodoulides pointed out the current global and regional challenges, including the situation in Ukraine and various internal issues the EU faces, such as the Multiannual Financial Framework and competitiveness concerns. He emphasized that Cyprus is prepared to take on the responsibilities of the EU Presidency, expressing full optimism about successfully addressing the tasks ahead, which he termed as a ‘national mission.’

Cyprus is scheduled to assume the EU Presidency on January 1, 2026.
