Nicosia: 36.4% of people aged 65 and over in Cyprus rate their health as very good or good, as revealed by recent data from Eurostat, published in conjunction with World Health Day. Within this senior age group, men reported a slightly higher percentage of good health at 37.6% compared to 35.3% among women.
According to Cyprus News Agency, the self-reported health status improves in younger age brackets. Among those aged 45-64, 73.8% of Cypriots rated their health as very good or good, with women slightly surpassing men at 74.2% compared to 73.3%. For the 16-64 age group, the figure climbed to 85.5%, and it peaked at 95.2% among those aged 16-24.
At the European Union level, a broader perspective shows that 68.5% of the population assessed their health as very good or good, while 23.0% reported fair health, and 8.5% described it as bad or very bad. The Eurostat data highlights a trend where positive health self-evaluation declines with age, with 91.3% of those aged 16-24 reporting good health, which drops to 61.1% in the 55-64 age group, and further declines to 40.0% among those aged 65 and over.
The report also underscored that Ireland, Belgium, and Luxembourg have the highest percentages of seniors reporting good health within the EU, at 62.0%, 57.4%, and 56.8%, respectively. Conversely, Lithuania, Latvia, and Portugal reported lower figures, with only 12.5%, 13.1%, and 19.1% of the older population rating their health positively.
