Nicosia: The film "Hold Onto Me," directed by Cypriot filmmaker Myrsini Aristidou, has been selected as Cyprus's first official submission for the Oscar in the Best International Feature Film category. This decision was made by the seven-member National Nomination Committee for the Oscars.

According to Cyprus News Agency, the Deputy Ministry of Culture announced that the Committee completed its selection process for the year 2026, adhering to the established criteria and procedures set by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. The film "Hold Onto Me" was chosen after a thorough review of submitted films, marking a significant milestone for Cypriot cinema on the international stage.

The 99th Academy Awards ceremony is scheduled to occur in Los Angeles, USA, on March 14, 2027. The official submission of "Hold Onto Me" to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences signifies Cyprus's entry into the global cinematic arena.

The film features a talented cast, including Christos Passalis, Maria Petrova, Aulona Lupa, Jenny Sallo, Nikolas Metaxas, and Achilleas Grammatikopoulos. It has already garnered significant accolades, including the Audience Award at the 2026 Sundance Film Festival, an Honorable Mention for actress Maria Petrova at the 2026 Sofia International Film Festival, and multiple awards at the 2026 Cyprus Film Days Festival, among others.

"Hold Onto Me" tells the story of 11-year-old Iris, who discovers her estranged father has returned for his own father's funeral. Her journey to reconnect with him leads her to an old shipyard, setting the stage for an unexpected relationship that transforms both their lives.
