Nicosia: Cyprus recorded more than 10 times its normal rainfall in August, according to preliminary data released by the Department of Meteorology on Monday. Average rainfall in government-controlled areas of the Republic reached 30 millimetres by Monday morning, compared with a monthly average of 2.9 millimetres, an increase of 1,034%.
According to Cyprus News Agency, of the total rainfall recorded during the month, 22.5 millimetres fell in the last three days. The highest rainfall was recorded in Platania, where 83.9 millimetres fell, compared with a monthly average of 12.8 millimetres, an increase of 655%.
The largest percentage increases were recorded in Frenaros and Xylotymbou, where rainfall was more than 200 times the normal level for August. Frenaros recorded 27.3 millimetres, compared with a normal 0.1 millimetres, an increase of 27,300%. Xylotymbou recorded 40 millimetres, compared with a normal 0.2 millimetres, an increase of 20,000%.
Larnaca Airport recorded 26.2 millimetres, more than 40 times its normal August rainfall of 0.6 millimetres. At Gefyri Panagias, rainfall reached 43.4 millimetres, compared with a normal 1.5 millimetres, or almost 30 times the average.
All stations operated by the Department of Meteorology recorded rainfall well above the normal level for August, with the exception of Pano Panagia, where no rainfall was recorded, and Paphos Airport, where rainfall reached the seasonal average of 0.2 millimetres.
For the period from October 1, 2025, to the end of August 2026, cumulative rainfall reached 608.3 millimetres, or 122% of the normal level for the corresponding period. All meteorological stations across Cyprus recorded rainfall above 100% of the normal level.
