Cyprus Sees 9.1% Rise in Vehicle Registrations in First Nine Months of 2026

Rabat:Motor vehicle registrations in Cyprus increased by 9.1% during the first nine months of 2026, reaching a total of 43,890 compared to 40,212 in the same period of 2025, as reported by the Statistical Service.

According to Cyprus News Agency, hybrid cars made up 53% of passenger saloon car registrations, a significant rise from 44% in the previous year. However, in September alone, total motor vehicle registrations saw a decline of 3.9%, dropping to 5,326 from 5,544 in September 2025. Similarly, passenger saloon car registrations decreased by 2.5% to 4,254, down from 4,364 a year earlier.

During the January to September period, passenger saloon car registrations rose by 9% to 34,156 from 31,325 in the same timeframe in 2025. Among these, 30.8% were new vehicles, totaling 10,521, while 69.2% were used cars, amounting to 23,635. The registration of rental cars decreased by 17.1% to 3,780 from 4,559.

The proportion of petrol-powered passenger cars dropped to 34.8% from 42.8% the previous year. Diesel-powered cars accounted for 8%, slightly down from 8.5% in 2025. The share of electric cars also declined to 4.2% from 4.7%, whereas hybrid vehicles saw an increase to 53% from 44%.

Registrations of motor coaches and buses rose to 196, up from 132 in the corresponding period of 2025. Goods conveyance vehicle registrations experienced a 10.4% increase to 5,046, compared with 4,569. Light goods vehicles rose by 8.8% to 3,970, road tractors by 14.7% to 195, heavy goods vehicles by 16.3% to 621, and rental goods vehicles by 20.9% to 260.

Mopeds under 50cc registrations declined to 109 from 170, while motorcycles over 50cc increased by 8% to 3,802 compared with 3,522 in the same period last year.
