Nicosia: Cyprus triumphed at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games on Tuesday, adding three medals to their tally in gymnastics, with two silvers and one bronze.
According to Cyprus News Agency, Marios Georgiou was the standout performer, clinching two silver medals. He excelled in the parallel bars final with a score of 13.800 points and in the horizontal bar event, scoring 14.166 points. These achievements add to Georgiou's impressive collection of nine Commonwealth Games medals, which includes two golds and five bronzes from previous editions.
Georgiou expressed his future ambitions, stating, "The road ahead certainly includes another Olympic cycle. This year there is still the European Championships and the Mediterranean Games. I have a great deal of work ahead of me, but all of it is geared towards the Olympic Games in Los Angeles in 2028."
About 90 minutes before Georgiou's success in the parallel bars, Neofytos Kyriakou secured a bronze medal in the vault final. Kyriakou achieved a combined score of 13.733, with his first vault earning him 14.100 points and his second vault 13.366 points. Despite finishing level on points with Malaysia's Muhammad Sharul Aimy, Kyriakou was awarded the bronze medal due to his higher score on the first vault, following the competition's tie-break rules.
In the same vault final, another Cypriot gymnast, Kyriakos Markides, competed and finished eighth with a total score of 12.649.
These victories in gymnastics contributed to Cyprus's medal count at the Glasgow Games, bringing their total to five, following the country's initial successes in athletics.
