Nicosia: President of the Republic of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulides, has stated that Cyprus’ status as a secure hub in a region affected by ongoing crises is acknowledged worldwide. He emphasized that this role will gain further prominence during Cyprus’ Presidency of the Council of the European Union, which the nation will assume on January 1st, 2026.
According to Cyprus News Agency, during his speech at the International Sea Tourism Festival (ISTF) held at the Ayia Napa Marina, the President highlighted the significance of the maritime tourism sector to Cyprus, despite geopolitical challenges in the region. He noted that in 2025, the port of Limassol is projected to accommodate 140 cruise ships and 160,000 passengers, marking a notable increase from 2024.
This positive trend is anticipated to continue into 2026, with an estimated growth of 25%. The President remarked that the cruise industry is a significant growth driver, creating jobs and supporting local economies. Through the National Cruise Tourism Development Committee, the government is pursuing strategic partnerships to position Cyprus as a competitive, sustainable, safe, and reliable destination and hub for major cruise tourism companies.
Additionally, diving tourism is experiencing growth, and the President announced that draft legislation for licensing recreational diving service providers will soon be presented to the Council of Ministers for review. In November, the Deputy Ministry of Tourism is expected to present a comprehensive study on organizing, developing, and promoting the diving tourism sector, along with supporting international water sports events through a Grant Scheme.
The President also mentioned the record-high performance in revenue and tourist arrivals in 2024, stating that current data suggests 2025 will be another record year for tourism. He expressed a vision for Cyprus to become an attractive and competitive destination and a leading maritime tourism hub in the Eastern Mediterranean and the broader Middle East.
Cyprus, with steady progress and strategic planning, is gradually establishing itself as a dynamic and developing hub of Blue Development, playing an increasingly significant role in the regional and European economy. The President concluded by highlighting Cyprus’ excellent tourist infrastructure, such as the Ayia Napa Marina, reliable services, skilled workforce, excellent relations with regional states and peoples, and security, which serve as comparative advantages for the country.
