Nicosia: Natural gas agreement with Egypt in line with international law and sovereign rights, sources in Nicosia tell CNA.
Sources in Nicosia stress that the Republic of Cyprus is acting based on international law and its sovereign rights, commenting on reactions from the Turkish Cypriot side regarding the Cyprus-Egypt agreement in the field of natural gas. They stated that 'as the Republic of Cyprus, we exercise our sovereign rights in accordance with international law as a member state of the UN and the EU.'
According to Cyprus News Agency, sources were invited to comment on a letter transmitted to the United Nations via Turkey on behalf of the Turkish Cypriots, which rejects as 'invalid' an agreement signed on March 30, 2026, in Cairo, on the sidelines of the 'EGYPES 2026' conference, concerning cooperation in the development and potential export of natural gas from Cyprus' exclusive economic zone.
Cyprus is currently developing natural resources discovered within the Republic's Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), while several international companies are involved in hydrocarbon exploration and exploitation activities.
