Cyprus Reaffirms Commitment to UN Convention on the Law of the Sea

Nicosia:Cyprus' Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Maria Michael, emphasized the necessity of turning international commitments into actionable outcomes to advance the Sustainable Development Goals during her address to the UN General Assembly's Second Committee on October 6.

According to Cyprus News Agency, Ambassador Michael reiterated Cyprus' steadfast support for the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea. She highlighted that the main question now is not whether commitments are adequate but whether they can be translated into measurable outcomes, as the 2030 Agenda reaches a critical phase.

She pointed out that conflict, inequality, and climate-related challenges are threatening developmental progress, especially for the most vulnerable communities. Michael called for renewed commitment to multilateral cooperation and financing models that can deliver on a large scale, in line with the Sevilla Commitment.

Michael also noted the intensified climate pressures in the Mediterranean, which she described as a climate change hotspot. She mentioned that prolonged heatwaves, droughts, and wildfires have become commonplace in this region. In response, an EU co-funded regional hub called CRAFS was established in Cyprus to enhance aerial firefighting, disaster response, and civil protection across the southern Mediterranean and the Middle East.

Highlighting the importance of Sustainable Development Goal 14, Michael stressed the conservation and sustainable use of oceans and marine resources, reinforcing Cyprus' unwavering support for the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea. She emphasized the binding nature of its provisions on all states, whether or not they have acceded to the Convention.

Ambassador Michael also outlined Cyprus' development cooperation and humanitarian assistance efforts through CyprusAid, which include support for education, healthcare, and community capacity building, particularly in the Global South, Africa, and Small Island Developing States.

Finally, she remarked on Cyprus' tenure on the United Nations Human Rights Council as an opportunity to promote equal access to education, healthcare, and economic opportunities, especially for women, youth, and marginalized groups. Michael concluded by emphasizing the urgency of strengthening resilience, protecting natural resources, and building partnerships to accelerate the achievement of sustainable development goals by 2030.
