Cyprus has expressed many times at an international level its readiness for initiatives to be taken to combat piracy, Shipping Deputy Minister Vassilis Demetriades has told CNA, adding that the phenomenon constitutes a scourge for shipping and commercial vessels.
In statements to CNA, following an attack by pirates against Greek owned containership “Tonsberg” in the Gulf of Guinea Demetriades expressed his regret that such phenomena take place in shipping.
“Piracy constitutes one of the black marks and a scourge for commercial ships, particularly in areas where there is flare-up and is a matter which is of concern for the international shipping community for a long time,” he added.
