Nicosia:The President of the Republic of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulides, emphasized the government's unwavering objective of reunifying Cyprus into a modern, sovereign state during a televised message marking the anniversary of the Declaration of Independence of the Republic of Cyprus.
According to Cyprus News Agency, President Christodoulides outlined his vision for a sovereign Cyprus, free from occupation forces and foreign guarantor states, where all citizens enjoy equal rights as other European citizens. He highlighted the importance of enhancing the country's deterrent capabilities and making strategic use of Cyprus's European status to influence matters affecting the nation.
In his address, the President expressed gratitude to those who contributed to Cyprus's independence and acknowledged the ongoing challenges posed by the Turkish invasion and occupation. He noted the resilience of the Cypriot people in rebuilding the state and economy after the events of 1974.
President Christodoulides also reflected on Cyprus's progress since joining the European Union in 2004, achieving recognition as a modern state with a credible voice in international affairs. However, he stressed that resolving the occupation of 37 percent of Cyprus's territory remains a top priority.
Efforts to resume negotiations for a solution based on European Union principles and values continue, despite obstacles. The President criticized the Turkish President's calls for a two-state solution and reaffirmed his commitment to creating conditions for renewed talks.
