Nicosia:President of Cyprus Nikos Christodoulides announced his intention to propose a joint meeting with the Turkish Cypriot leader next week, expressing hope for a positive outcome.
According to Cyprus News Agency, President Christodoulides made the announcement during his arrival at the opening ceremony of the new judicial year of the Supreme Constitutional Court. He mentioned ongoing communication with Maria Angela Holguin, the UN Secretary-General's Personal Envoy for Cyprus, who will soon announce her arrival date in Cyprus.
The President has tasked the Greek Cypriot negotiator with reaching out to the Turkish Cypriot side to arrange the proposed meeting. He emphasized the importance of continuing discussions initiated before the recent meetings in New York, aligning with the dialogues held with the UN Secretary-General.
Christodoulides expressed a commitment to progress, noting that there is "political will" and ideas addressing the three issues highlighted by the UN Secretary-General. These ideas have been positively received, and the President intends to continue the discussions.
When questioned about concerns regarding a potential Turkish UN Secretary-General, the President stated that while Turkey is pursuing its own agenda, Cyprus remains focused on its objectives. He highlighted ongoing communication with European partners and other countries to monitor developments.
The President concluded by stressing the significance of behind-the-scenes work over public declarations, as efforts continue to resolve the longstanding division of Cyprus since 1974. Despite past unsuccessful UN-led peace talks, there remains a collective effort to prepare for a broader meeting to find a resolution, with María Angela Holguín actively engaging with involved parties.
