Cyprus President going to N. York meeting with sincere political will, Spokesman says

Cyprus President, Nikos Christodoulides, is going to the meeting in New York, with a sincere political will with the aim of a constructive, fruitful discussion, in line with international law and the United Nations framework that will be the starting point for the resumption of negotiations, Government Spokesperson, Konstantinos Letymbiotis, said in a written statement on Tuesday.

‘The aim of this meeting is to explore the prospect of resuming negotiations within the framework defined by the resolutions of the United Nations Security Council,’ he added.

In his statement, Letymbiotis notes that President Christodoulides ‘arrived this morning in New York’, where he will sit down to a dinner with UN Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, and leader of the Turkish Cypriot community, Ersin Tatar. The dinner will take place at 19:00 (New York time) at the UN headquarters, he notes.

After the meeting, President Christodoulides is to make statements to media representatives, while he will depart this evening for Brussels to participate in the European Council, Letymbiotis said.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. Repeated rounds of UN-led peace talks have so far failed to yield results. The latest round of negotiations, in July 2017 at the Swiss resort of Crans-Montana ended inconclusively.
