Copenhagen: President of the Republic Nikos Christodoulides held a series of important meetings with heads of state or government in Denmark, as the nation prepares for its upcoming Cyprus Presidency of the Council of the EU, Deputy Minister for European Affairs Marilena Raouna announced.
According to Cyprus News Agency, Raouna, who accompanied President Christodoulides to Denmark, reported that among the leaders he met was President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky. It was agreed during their meeting that President Christodoulides would visit Ukraine in December. These discussions took place on the sidelines of the European Political Community Summit in Copenhagen, where President Christodoulides engaged in several bilateral meetings requested by Cyprus’ partners in anticipation of their EU Council Presidency beginning in January.
Raouna highlighted that President Christodoulides and President Zelensky discussed recent efforts to resolve the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, focusing on security guarantees. Cypru
s reaffirmed its support for Ukraine and its commitment to advancing Ukraine’s EU accession negotiations during its presidency.
In another significant meeting, President Christodoulides conferred with the Prime Minister of Denmark to review progress made during the Danish Presidency on key issues that Cyprus will soon oversee, including crucial negotiations, the EU’s Multiannual Financial Framework, and migration-related matters. Raouna emphasized the presence of important legislative proposals concerning the return of asylum seekers, which Cyprus is set to negotiate.
Additionally, President Christodoulides met with the President of Moldova, who expressed intentions to visit Cyprus in November ahead of the Cyprus Presidency. Meetings also took place with the President of Switzerland, regarding the completion of the EU-Switzerland package of agreements, and with Prince Albert of Monaco.
