Cyprus President Discusses New York Contacts on Cyprus Issue

Nicosia:President Nikos Christodoulides is leading a meeting of the National Council, his primary advisory body on the Cyprus issue, to discuss his recent interactions in New York City with United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and his personal envoy Maria Angela Holguin. The meeting is scheduled to commence at 930 local time. According to Cyprus News Agency, President Christodoulides acknowledged the existence of difficulties, problems, and challenges, but emphasized that the Cyprus problem is not at a stalemate. He mentioned ongoing efforts by the European Union directed towards Turkey, as the Turkish side continues to advocate for a two-state solution. Negotiator Menelaos Menelaou noted that the UN Secretary-General has specific plans for future actions. Additionally, Maria Angela Holguin is expected to visit Cyprus in October. Cyprus has remained divided since 1974 following Turkey's invasion and occupation of its northern third. Despite numerous rounds of UN-led peace talks, a resolution h as yet to be achieved, largely due to Turkish intransigence. The most recent negotiations, held in July 2017 at the Swiss resort of Crans-Montana, ended without conclusion. UN Secretary-General Guterres, nearing the end of his term, announced plans to convene another meeting in a broader format, pending adequate preparation, though he did not specify a timeline. He has secured the agreement of both parties and the guarantor powers for this meeting. María Angela Holguín, as Guterres' Personal Envoy on Cyprus, is responsible for engaging with the involved parties, while Executive Vice-President Raffaele Fitto serves as the European Commission's Special Representative for Cyprus, succeeding Johannes Hahn.
