Cyprus President and UK Premier agree to meet at the soonest available opportunity

The latest developments on the Cyprus issue, the bilateral relationship and regional issues were discussed in a call between the President of the Republic of Cyprus and the UK Prime Minister on Wednesday afternoon.

The two leaders touched upon the efforts to resume talks towards a settlement to the long-standing Cyprus issue, 50 years since the Turkish invasion and start of occupation of the northern part of the island.

Downing Street said that President Nikos Christodoulides ‘warmly welcomed’ Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer’s reset with European and global partners.

They agreed that this reset also marked ‘an important opportunity to deepen the invaluable relationship that the UK and Cyprus share, particularly on issues including regional security and migration.’

Turning to the situation in the Middle East, the two leaders shared concerns about further escalation following recent events, and emphasised the importance of their engagement in the region to ensure stability.
