Nicosia: A meeting between Cyprus President Nicos Christodoulides and Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhurman began shortly after 11.00am (local time) on Tuesday, in the presence of Khassim Diagne, UN Secretary-General's Special Representative in Cyprus and head of the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP).
According to Cyprus News Agency, the talks are being held at the residence of Khassim Diagne within the UN-controlled buffer zone in Nicosia. Erhurman arrived at the venue a few minutes after 1100, followed two minutes later by President Christodoulides.
Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. Repeated rounds of UN-led peace talks have so far failed to yield results. The latest round of negotiations, in July 2017 at the Swiss resort of Crans-Montana ended inconclusively.
