Cyprus Presidency Prioritizes Children’s Future and Poverty Elimination, Evangelou Highlights

Brussels: The Deputy Minister of Social Welfare, Marilena Evangelou, shared insights with CNA regarding the Cyprus Presidency’s focus in Social Policy while attending the EU Employment and Social Affairs Council (EPSCO) in Brussels.

According to Cyprus News Agency, Evangelou emphasized that from January 1st, Cyprus will play a crucial role in driving discussions among EU member states for six months. The primary focus for Cyprus is ensuring a better future for children and eradicating poverty and social exclusion.

Evangelou highlighted additional priorities including long-term care and active ageing, aiming to enhance the quality of life for older individuals, a significant concern for all EU nations due to demographic shifts. She stressed the importance of integrating persons with disabilities into society, both at the national and European levels, with a push for innovative legislation and the advancement of the European Disability Strategy during Cyprus’s Presidency.

Discussing strategies to combat poverty, Evangelou mentioned the European Anti-Poverty Strategy, which is under negotiation and expected to be announced during Cyprus’s term. This will be coupled with the European Child Guarantee to address child poverty. Evangelou expressed satisfaction with Cyprus’s progress, stating that it has met targets set by the European Union and the Barcelona Strategy ahead of schedule, while continuing efforts for further improvement.

During her visit, Evangelou will also participate in a conference for European Disability Week, alongside the Commissioner for Equality, Hadja Lahbib. She will showcase the initiatives and plans of the Cypriot Presidency related to disability issues. Additionally, Evangelou is engaging with the European Parliament’s Employment and Social Affairs Committee as part of the European Disability Week events.
