Brussels: The priorities of the Cypriot Presidency in the areas of transport, shipping, and tourism were presented Tuesday by the Minister of Transport, Communications and Works, Alexis Vafeadis, the Deputy Minister of Shipping, Marina Chatzimanoli, and the Deputy Minister of Tourism, Kostas Koumis.
According to Cyprus News Agency, during a meeting of the European Parliament's Committee on Transport and Tourism (TRAN), the Presidency representatives outlined their key objectives aimed at enhancing the competitiveness, resilience, and strategic autonomy of the European Union.
Minister Vafeadis highlighted that the Presidency's motto, 'An Autonomous Union, Open to the World,' underscores the ambition to bolster the Union's strategic autonomy, resilience, and competitiveness. He emphasized efforts to accelerate the transition toward a stronger and more resilient European transport system, focusing on air passenger rights, cleaner road transport, and enhancing Europe's connectivity.
Deputy Minister of Shipping Marina Hadjimanolis stressed the transformation underway in the EU shipping sector. She outlined the adoption of the Nicosia Declaration as a priority, aimed at modernizing maritime education and promoting women's participation in maritime professions. The Cypriot Presidency aims to strengthen EU cohesion and influence within the International Maritime Organization, ensuring Europe acts promptly and in a coordinated manner.
Deputy Minister of Tourism Kostas Koumis underscored tourism's role as a strategic pillar of the European economy, contributing significantly to GDP and employment. The Presidency will focus on sustainable tourism models that benefit local communities and protect the environment. Efforts will be made to enhance European tourism's attractiveness through investments in innovation and support for SMEs.
