Nicosia: Cyprus is acknowledged as a significant member and supporter of the European Defence Agency (EDA), according to the Agency’s Chief Executive, Andre Denk, during his visit to Nicosia. Denk met with Defence Minister Vasilis Palmas to discuss the preparation of a high-level conference on defence to be held in Cyprus.
According to Cyprus News Agency, Palmas emphasized the importance of productive cooperation within the framework of the Cyprus Presidency of the Council of the EU, which aims to benefit European defence and security. Palmas highlighted the EDA as a key partner for Cyprus and the EU in defence capability development and initiatives.
The Republic of Cyprus has been an active partner within the EDA’s programmes, facilitated by close cooperation between the Defence Ministry and the Agency. Palmas and Denk discussed various issues, including support for EDA initiatives, Cyprus’ involvement in the SAFE mechanism, and the upcoming EU Council Presidency in 2026.
Minister Palmas reiterated Cyprus’ commitment to deepening cooperation on defence policy and strengthening European Strategic Autonomy. He also mentioned efforts to expand cooperation with other EU member states and third countries like the United States.
Highlighting the EDA’s role in joint defence programmes, research, and innovation, Palmas expressed the Ministry’s support for partnerships between the public, private, and academic sectors in EU research initiatives. He concluded by underscoring the importance of cooperation during Cyprus’ EU Council Presidency for common European security and defence.
Denk praised Cyprus as a crucial EDA member and expressed his eagerness to visit. He emphasized the EDA’s role in facilitating intergovernmental defence cooperation across the EU and acknowledged Cyprus’ voice in Brussels. Denk looks forward to collaborating closely with Cyprus, especially in light of the upcoming EU Council Presidency, and plans to attend the defence conference in Cyprus.
