Nicosia: Cyprus is in active communication with Greece and stands ready to assist in extinguishing the widespread wildfires currently ravaging the nation, Chief Fire Officer of the Republic of Cyprus, Nicos Logginos, informed the Cyprus News Agency (CNA) on Monday. Logginos emphasized the dire need for large firefighting aircraft to combat the blazes effectively, as Cypriot authorities coordinate with their Greek counterparts to offer any necessary assistance.
According to Cyprus News Agency, Logginos highlighted the immense efforts being undertaken by Greek firefighting units to control the wildfires, which are proving challenging due to unpredictable weather conditions. The strong winds have been a significant obstacle, causing the fires to change direction rapidly and creating numerous hot spots, making the situation perilous.
Logginos confirmed that Cyprus has communicated its willingness to deploy its own firefighting airplanes while awaiting a response from Greece. However, he pointed out that the scale of the fires necessitates the use of larger aircraft for a more effective response. "It is a huge fire, larger aircraft are needed," he stressed, underlining the magnitude of the crisis.
Maintaining close contact with the Chief of the Hellenic Fire Service, Logginos reiterated Cyprus's readiness to support Greece in any way possible, highlighting the continuous communication between the two nations during this emergency.
