Cyprus Justice Minister Outlines Operational Plan for EU Presidency

Nicosia: Justice Minister, Constantinos Fytiris, said on Tuesday that the prerequisites for a successful EU Presidency are security, smooth execution of operations, and high operational readiness. The Minister presented the General Policing Operational Plan for the Cyprus Presidency of the Council of the EU which begins on January 1st, pointing out that assuming the Presidency is a crucial challenge for the Republic of Cyprus and a bet that must be won.

According to Cyprus News Agency, the operational plan was prepared by the Cyprus Police, in collaboration with the Secretariat of the Cyprus Presidency and other competent state bodies, with the aim of safeguarding the security of all foreign officials, delegations, and conference participants who will be visiting Cyprus for the next six months. Fytiris congratulated the Cyprus Police for preparing a complete, documented, and detailed operational plan, as well as for the level of preparedness.

He assured that the Ministry of Justice and Public Order is fully prepared to provide all necessary support and assistance, so that the Police can respond successfully to their tasks. The Operational Plan covers all areas of police activity and includes, among others, the collection and evaluation of information, risk assessment, security measures, and foreign delegation escorts and assistance.

Particular emphasis is placed on airport security, traffic arrangements and travel, the security of accommodation and conference venues, as well as the management of high-level events. The Minister pointed out that the successful and safe exercise of the Cyprus EU Presidency is a national responsibility, adding that the state must guarantee the security, institutional commitment, and international credibility of the country, in a period of increased European presence and demands.
