NICOSIA: House of Representatives President, Annita Demetriou, affirmed the nation’s commitment to tirelessly work towards the liberation and reunification of Cyprus during an event held on Saturday in memory of Kyriakos Matsis at the Imprisoned Graves in Nicosia.
According to Cyprus News Agency, Demetriou highlighted the impact of recent developments in the United States, the tumultuous situation in the Eastern Mediterranean, and broader European dynamics. She emphasized that these factors are shaping a new geopolitical landscape in which Cyprus must navigate carefully. “We must proceed with cautious handling, collective effort, and vision based on the clear Western orientation of our country,” she said.
“We possess all the resources and have created the conditions for Cyprus to become a pillar of security and stability.” Reiterating a firm stance, she said that “we do not accept the illegal occupation regime nor the dividing barbed wires. We are working tirelessly for the liberation and freedom of our cou
ntry-the one and indivisible homeland.”
Demetriou underscored the importance of close collaboration with European partners and full cooperation with Greece, describing it as Cyprus’ enduring and natural ally. “Our belief in this goal is steadfast,” she continued. “We will do whatever is possible to enhance it even more.”
In concluding her remarks, Demetriou reflected on the legacy of those who have sacrificed for Cyprus. “The sacrifice of our heroes makes it imperative for us to continue the struggle for a free Cyprus. This is what the times demand; this is what love for our homeland dictates. And this is what the next generations rightfully expect from us-until redemption, until final justice,” she said.
Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. Repeated rounds of UN-led peace talks have so far failed to yield results. The latest round of negotiations, in July 2017 at the Swiss resort of Crans-Montana ended inconclusively.
