Nicosia: The Cyprus Government has expressed 'deep sadness and concern' following the sinking of a vessel off Kyrenia, with Government Spokesperson Konstantinos Letympiotis stressing that the Republic of Cyprus has been ready from the outset to assist search and rescue efforts.
According to Cyprus News Agency, Letympiotis conveyed the government's sentiments in a post on X, written in both Greek and Turkish. He highlighted the nation's sorrow for those who have lost their lives and extended sympathies to the injured, victims, and their families as they navigate this tragic period.
Letympiotis emphasized that from the very first moment, the Republic of Cyprus declared its full readiness to provide immediate assistance to the search and rescue efforts, making every necessary means available. He underscored the prioritization of human life in such dire circumstances.
The vessel that sank off Kyrenia on Sunday was carrying approximately 267 individuals, including passengers and crew members. Current reports indicate that 241 people have been rescued, while eight have died, and 18 remain missing, with search and rescue operations still underway.
The Republic of Cyprus' Joint Rescue Coordination Centre (JRCC) in Larnaca had offered to assist with the search and rescue operation. This offer was communicated to the Turkish Cypriot side through the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP), but it was not accepted.
Cyprus has been divided since 1974, following Turkey's invasion and occupation of the northern third of the island. Despite numerous rounds of UN-led peace talks, a resolution has yet to be achieved.
