Cyprus Engages in Strategic Discussions with the US for Potential NATO Membership.

Nicosia: Cyprus is actively engaging in discussions with the United States to explore potential pathways to NATO membership, as announced by President Nikos Christodoulides. The talks are focused on leveraging opportunities at three levels that NATO membership presents, with the strategic aim of positioning Cyprus to join the alliance once all conditions are favorable.

According to Cyprus News Agency, President Christodoulides addressed the issue while speaking to journalists at the 8th National Skills Competition SkillsCyprus 2024, held at the former Cyprus State Fair. In response to inquiries about Cyprus’s intentions to apply for NATO membership, the President highlighted the current obstacle posed by Turkey’s objections, which restricts Cyprus from accessing military upgrades and equipment opportunities available to NATO members.

The President emphasized ongoing discussions with the United States and expressed satisfaction with the positive reception from the US side. These talks aim to prepare Cyprus f
or NATO membership by taking advantage of the alliance’s opportunities, enhancing the Republic’s deterrent capabilities. Christodoulides stressed the significance of strengthening Cyprus’s defense capabilities, emphasizing collaborations with the US, NATO, and the EU, particularly through European Defence Agency programs.

Christodoulides also highlighted Cyprus’s strategic geographical advantage in a geostrategically important region, noting that plans are underway to enhance naval and airbase infrastructure. These developments are being discussed with the EU and the US, reflecting advanced consultations for military enhancement.

The President acknowledged the positive feedback from the US regarding these initiatives and hinted at forthcoming developments in the Defense and Security sector that will further bolster Cyprus’s deterrent power. However, he refrained from specifying a timeline for when Cyprus might apply for NATO membership, suggesting that discretion would bring them closer to their objective.
