Cyprus Endorses Key EU Environmental Initiatives at Luxembourg Meeting

Luxembourg: The support of Cyprus for three important EU environmental initiatives was expressed by Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment, Maria Panayiotou, at the EU Environment Council, which is meeting today in Luxembourg. As the Minister said in a statement, among the important issues on the agenda, three stand out in particular for Cyprus.

According to Cyprus News Agency, the first initiative is the Regulation on circularity requirements in vehicle design and end-of-life vehicle management. Maria Panayiotou noted that Cyprus supports this Regulation as it represents a meaningful step towards circularity. She emphasized that it addresses pressing environmental and industrial challenges and reinforces Europe’s commitment to sustainability.

The second initiative is the Water Resilience Strategy, recently presented by the European Commission. Panayiotou described this as a crucial topic for Cyprus, highlighting its comprehensive action plan of over 50 measures aimed at managing water resources more efficiently and ensuring their availability and quality. Cyprus welcomes the focus on water resilience and the proposed financial mechanisms that are vital for implementing sustainable water management systems.

The third major item is the EU’s path towards the Conference of the Parties to the Climate Change Conference scheduled for November 2025. The Minister stressed the importance of Europe having a clear message that supports ambitious contributions aligned with the Paris Agreement. She advocated for a fair, inclusive transition towards net-zero emissions, emphasizing the need for transparent climate finance and a balanced approach that aligns ambition with feasibility.
