Cyprus Emphasizes Diplomatic Role Amidst Regional Tensions

Nicosia: The Republic of Cyprus remains a factor of stability and focuses on diplomacy, a government source told CNA on Wednesday. "What is of importance and is absolutely clear, is the role of the Republic of Cyprus. Cyprus does not threaten anyone and is not a factor of military escalation in the region. On the contrary, it has functioned over time as a pillar of stability, security and cooperation and as a bridge between the European Union and the wider Middle East," the same source continued, following a Financial Times report with references to a possible Iranian retaliation in the event of a new American attack.

According to Cyprus News Agency, the government source pointed out that "the Republic of Cyprus maintains open diplomatic channels with Iran as well. In the context of these contacts, the real facts, positions and role of our country are conveyed with clarity and precision."

The source added that Cyprus's positions concerning the British Bases in Cyprus are well-known and have been communicated appropriately. This stance underscores Cyprus's dedication to transparency and consistent diplomacy in its international relations.

Moreover, the source emphasized that "the Republic of Cyprus itself has been suffering the consequences of a military invasion and illegal occupation by Turkey for 52 years now. We therefore know better than many what the use of force, aggression and violation of international law mean." These experiences have shaped Cyprus's approach to prioritizing diplomatic solutions and advocating for peaceful resolutions.

"Cyprus chooses diplomacy, stability and de-escalation. This was and remains our role in the region," the source concluded, reinforcing the country's commitment to fostering peace and cooperation in a historically volatile region.
