Cyprus: Cyprus recorded a total of 12,194 cataract surgeries in 2023, ranking 10th among European Union member states in terms of the number of procedures per 100,000 inhabitants, according to data published by Eurostat on Monday.
According to Cyprus News Agency, Cyprus recorded 1,273.23 cataract surgeries per 100,000 inhabitants, a rate higher than the European Union average, which stood at 1,118 surgeries per 100,000 inhabitants. Of the total number of procedures carried out in Cyprus, 36 involved in-patients who required an overnight stay in hospital.
At EU level, cataract surgery - which involves the removal of the eye's lens - was performed more than 5 million times in 2023.
Luxembourg recorded the highest rate in the EU, with 1,627.3 surgeries per 100,000 inhabitants. It was followed by France with 1,598.7 procedures and Estonia with 1,506.8 procedures per 100,000 inhabitants.
At the other end of the scale, Romania recorded the lowest rate, with 389.4 procedures per 100,000 inhabitants, followed by Poland with 628.8 and Bulgaria with 745.8 surgeries per 100,000 inhabitants.
