Nicosia: Cyprus increased its medal tally to nine at the 23rd Commonwealth Games in Glasgow after Odysseas Georgakis won the bronze medal in the men's under-81kg judo event, marking the country's fourth medal in the sport.
According to Cyprus News Agency, Georgakis bounced back from a hard-fought semi-final defeat, where he lost in the golden score period after a closely contested bout, to secure bronze by defeating Gabon's Fernand Nkero by ippon in the repechage medal contest.
The medal further underlined the strength of Cyprus' judo team, which has maintained a perfect record at the Games, with every Cypriot judoka who has competed reaching the podium.
Cyprus' judo medals have been won by Giorgos Balartzishvili, Petros Christodoulides, Sofia Asvesta, and Odysseas Georgakis, contributing four of the country's nine medals so far at the Games, the Committee said.
