Cyprus Celebrates Europe Day with Events in Nicosia and Larnaka

Nicosia: Cyprus celebrates Europe Day, May 9, with events in Nicosia and Larnaka.

According to Cyprus News Agency, May 9 has been designated as Europe Day and is celebrated every year throughout the European Union. It serves as an occasion to strengthen European identity and cooperation among member states. Cyprus actively engages in these celebrations with events aimed at promoting European awareness and the principles and values of the EU.

On May 8, the European Parliament Office and the European Commission Representation in Cyprus will host a reception for the Diplomatic Corps, government officials, and partner organisations at the EU House in Nicosia. The event will feature opening remarks by Deputy Minister for European Affairs, Marilena Raouna, European Commissioner for Fisheries and Oceans, Costas Kadis, and the heads of the European Parliament Office and the European Commission Representation in Cyprus, Thea Pieridou and Panicos Pourgourides. Additionally, a musical piece will be presented by the GC School of Careers, participating in the European Parliament Ambassador School Programme (EPAS).

On Saturday morning, the European Union flag will be raised in the courtyard of the old Nicosia City Hall at the initiative of the Municipality of Nicosia. Speeches will be delivered by the President of the Republic of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulides, the Mayor of Nicosia, Charalambos Prountzos, European Commissioner, Costas Kadis, and the Head of the European Parliament Office in Cyprus, Thea Pieridou.

Later that day, the European Parliament Office and the European Commission Representation, in collaboration with the Municipality of Larnaca and the European Information Centre in Larnaca, will co-organise an event featuring information booths that showcase EU projects, civil society organisations, schools, and EU embassies. This event will begin at 17:00, and will include a performance by the Larnaca Municipality Children's Philharmonic Orchestra and a photo exhibition titled 'Beneath the Surface: CMMI's Dive into Marine Sciences.'

At 19:30, a video message from the President of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola, will be shown, followed by a musical programme by the Larnaca Municipality Children's Choir and a concert inspired by Mediterranean and European music. The event will be held under the auspices of the Cyprus Presidency of the Council of the EU.
