Nicosia: The annual event commemorating the Armed Forces Day of the Republic of Cyprus took place last week at the Cyprus High Commission in London. The gathering was attended by diplomats, military attach©s, representatives from the UK Ministry of Defence, friends of Cyprus, and members of the Cypriot community, with the presence of Archbishop Nikitas of Thyateira and Great Britain.

According to Cyprus News Agency, attendees were welcomed by Dr Kyriacos Kouros, the High Commissioner of the Republic of Cyprus to the United Kingdom, and Lt Col Kyprianos Savva, the Defence Attach©. During his speech, Dr Kouros underscored the significance of the Armed Forces in maintaining the sovereignty and security of Cyprus amid intensified geopolitical challenges in the Eastern Mediterranean. He addressed the ongoing Turkish occupation, emphasizing that nearly 37% of Cyprus has been under military control since the 1974 invasion.

Dr Kouros expressed optimism about renewed efforts to restart meaningful negotiations on the Cyprus issue under the United Nations Secretary-General's guidance, emphasizing President Nikos Christodoulides' dedication to the process. He further highlighted Cyprus' increasing geostrategic significance and the expansion of its partnerships with countries such as Greece, France, the United States, and the United Kingdom.

He placed special emphasis on Cyprus-UK relations, particularly in defence and security, describing London as a vital partner for Nicosia. He pointed out that their bilateral cooperation extends to military training, crisis management, and humanitarian assistance. Dr Kouros cited the Amalthea initiative as a notable example, which involves providing humanitarian aid to Gaza through a maritime corridor, with significant contributions from the United Kingdom.

Lt Col Kyprianos Savva also addressed the gathering, discussing the crucial role of the National Guard in upholding the national sovereignty, independence, and security of Cyprus.
