Nicosia: Deputy Minister to the President of Cyprus, Irene Piki, and the Under Secretary of Homeland Security for Strategy, Policy and Plans of the United States, Rob Law, held a meeting on Monday to discuss pivotal issues concerning regional security, migration challenges, and potential cooperation in law enforcement and intelligence. Additionally, the talks included discussions on Cyprus' potential accession to the U.S. Visa Waiver Program.

According to Cyprus News Agency, the meeting was part of Rob Law's regional tour, accompanied by DHS Deputy Under Secretary John Gountanis. The Deputy Minister's Office emphasized that Law's visit underscores the robust strategic partnership between Cyprus and the United States, highlighting both nations' shared commitment to expanding their cooperation in mutual areas of interest.

The discussions underscored the excellent bilateral relations and a mutual resolve to enhance their strategic partnership, particularly focusing on regional security, migration management, and intelligence sharing. Cyprus' role as a dependable and predictable partner in the Eastern Mediterranean was also a focal point, with both sides reviewing significant progress in areas such as border security and citizen mobility.

In terms of the U.S. Visa Waiver Program, it was noted that Cyprus has met the necessary technical criteria, and further discussions will proceed following U.S. internal procedures. The importance of ongoing cooperation within the broader strategic relationship was emphasized by both parties.

The meeting also resulted in an agreement to bolster cooperation and exchange expertise in critical infrastructure protection and counter-cyber threat efforts. These areas are increasingly vital for the collective security and resilience of states.

Piki reiterated Cyprus' dedication to deepening its strategic ties with the United States to enhance security, stability, and prosperity in the region. During his stay, Law is also set to meet with other key officials, including Nikolas Ioannides and Theodora Constantinidou, to further this agenda.
