Cyprus and UK Collaborate to Launch Europe’s First Counter-Terrorism Programme for Tourism

Nicosia: The British High Commission, in collaboration with the Deputy Ministry of Tourism, is set to host a conference titled ‘Safeguarding Cyprus’s Tourism Industry’. This conference will officially introduce the Counter-Terrorism Awareness E-Learning Training Programme on Wednesday, 26 November 2025, at the City of Dreams Mediterranean.

According to Cyprus News Agency, this initiative marks the first formal rollout of its kind in Europe and represents a significant step in the joint efforts of the UK and Cyprus to enhance public safety and preparedness within the tourism sector.

The programme, developed by the UK Home Office for the Deputy Ministry of Tourism, is part of a strategic initiative aimed at bolstering protective security within Cyprus’s tourism industry. It is designed to provide professionals working in high-traffic areas, such as hotels, airports, ports, restaurants, bars, shopping centres, and entertainment venues, with the skills necessary to identify and respond to various serious threats. These threats include suspicious behaviour and items, bomb threats, firearm and weapons attacks, and insider threats.

Serving as a practical, industry-wide preparedness tool, the programme aids in managing serious incidents that could disrupt operations or compromise public safety. By equipping frontline staff and management with the capability to recognise and respond to threats swiftly and effectively, the programme directly supports the safety of both visitors and personnel. This initiative reinforces Cyprus’s reputation as a secure, resilient, and high-quality tourist destination.

To ensure widespread accessibility and impact, the e-learning modules will be available on the Deputy Ministry of Tourism’s official website. The training is designed for seamless integration into existing security protocols and is readily adaptable across the industry, facilitating consistent, high-quality security awareness for professionals at all levels.

The launch event will feature keynote addresses by Dr Costas Constantinou, the Permanent Secretary of the Deputy Ministry of Tourism, and Michael Tatham, the British High Commissioner. The event will also include panel discussions, real-life testimonials, and case studies that underscore the importance of proactive security awareness and cross-sector collaboration. Admission to the conference is free.
