Cyprus and Tajikistan Jointly Urge Stronger UN Action Against Human Trafficking

Nicosia: In a significant diplomatic move, Cyprus and Tajikistan have jointly called for intensified United Nations efforts to combat human trafficking. This appeal was made through a joint statement delivered by Cyprus’ Permanent Representative, Ambassador Maria Michail, during a UN session. The statement comes amid rising global concerns over trafficking, particularly affecting vulnerable groups like women and children.

According to Cyprus News Agency, Ambassador Michail expressed unwavering support for the UN Special Rapporteur on trafficking in persons, commending her comprehensive report and presentation. She reaffirmed the full backing of Cyprus and Tajikistan for the Rapporteur’s mandate, emphasizing the grave nature of trafficking as a crime that violates human rights and human dignity, transcending national borders.

The joint statement strongly condemned human trafficking as a “heinous crime” and highlighted its status as a serious global issue that requires concerted international action. The call
for stronger UN intervention underscores the urgency of addressing the multifaceted challenges posed by trafficking networks worldwide.

This diplomatic initiative reflects the commitment of both nations to advocate for enhanced international cooperation and accountability in tackling trafficking. The move is part of broader efforts to uphold human rights and protect the most vulnerable from exploitation and abuse.
