Nicosia:House of Representatives President Annita Demetriou and Spanish Ambassador Mercedes Alonso Frayle held a meeting on Monday to discuss bilateral relations, migration challenges, the Cyprus issue, and the regional situation.
According to Cyprus News Agency, Demetriou and Alonso Frayle emphasized the strong friendship between Cyprus and Spain, grounded in shared principles and values, mutual respect in international legal affairs, and their common status as EU member states.
They highlighted the importance of maintaining the new dynamics in parliamentary cooperation following the Spanish Congress President's official visit to Cyprus in 2025. Both parties expressed a commitment to intensifying cooperation in areas of shared interest, including managing migration challenges and addressing the rising cost of living.
Demetriou expressed Cyprus's solidarity with Spain regarding the migration crisis in Ceuta and stressed the need for collective EU-level action to address the situation. Alonso Frayle showed readiness to enhance Spain's relations with Cyprus, noting the positive development of increased connectivity between the two nations.
On the Cyprus issue, Demetriou conveyed disappointment over the lack of progress at the UN General Assembly due to Turkey's intransigent stance. She reiterated that a "two-state" solution proposed by Turkey would not be accepted, as it would legitimize the illegal Turkish invasion and occupation. Demetriou affirmed Cyprus's readiness to contribute constructively to negotiations for a bilateral, bicommunal federal solution, in line with international law and UN Security Council resolutions.
Demetriou also highlighted the importance of security and stability in light of challenges in the Middle East and beyond and stressed the consistent application of international law principles concerning Cyprus and other regions, without exceptions or double standards.
Cyprus has been divided since 1974 following Turkey's invasion and occupation of its northern third. UN-led peace talks have repeatedly failed, with the latest round in July 2017 ending without resolution. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres plans to convene another meeting after adequate preparation, with Mara Angela Holgun and Executive Vice-President Raffaele Fitto involved in the ongoing efforts.
