Thessaloniki:Recent international developments and bilateral cooperation were key topics of discussion in a meeting between Cyprus and Greece's Defense Ministers held on Wednesday in Thessaloniki. Cyprus Minister Vassilis Palmas attended the meeting as part of his visit to the city for the celebrations of the anniversary of October 28, 1940, known as "Ochi" or "OXI Day."
According to Cyprus News Agency, Greece's Minister Nikos Dendias highlighted discussions on security issues and defense collaboration between the two nations.
Furthermore, Minister Palmas, in comments to DEFENCE ReDEFiNED, emphasized the defense coordination between Cyprus and Greece and Cyprus' international partnerships in defense equipment. He noted the participation of Cypriot commandos in the Thessaloniki military parade and mentioned the permanent presence of Greek F-16 fighter jets and a Hellenic Navy vessel in Cyprus. Palmas also referred to bilateral cooperation agreements and joint programs, including those under the EU's SAFE program.
Palmas pointed to the strategic armaments relationship with Israel, highlighting a new agreement for an offshore patrol vessel and other planned armament programs with Israel aimed at enhancing Cyprus’s deterrent capabilities.
On social media, Palmas reflected on the historical significance of "Ochi Day," describing it as a symbol of resistance against totalitarianism and a call to uphold democratic ideals and unity within Hellenism. The Cyprus Presidency and Ministry of Foreign Affairs echoed similar sentiments, honoring the Greek resistance against fascism and emphasizing the importance of continuing the struggle for freedom.
