Cyprus Agriculture Minister to Discuss Water Scarcity in Brussels

Brussels: Maria Panayiotou, Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development, and Environment, will travel to Brussels to participate in the European Union’s Agriculture and Fisheries Council meeting on Monday, where she will present the common position of MED9 countries on water scarcity.

According to Cyprus News Agency, in a press release on Sunday, the Ministry stated that the unified MED9 stance, previously submitted in writing to the European Commission, aims to highlight the challenges faced by Mediterranean nations due to climate change. The group is seeking concrete European-level measures to address these issues.

During the Council meeting, the Polish Presidency is expected to outline its work program and priorities for the agriculture and fisheries sectors, the press release added. Agriculture Ministers will also exchange views on regulations aimed at strengthening the position of farmers within the food supply chain, with a focus on combating unfair trading practices. Important trade matters affecting the European agricultural sector will also be on the agenda.

Minister Panayiotou is set to return to Cyprus on Tuesday.
