Cyprus is actively participating in the actions and events to celebrate the anniversary of the establishment of the International Organisation of La Francophonie, Minister of Education, Sports and Youth Athena Michaelidou said on Monday. “We celebrate a language of global reach and a tradition of values, such as those of democracy, freedom and humanitarianism, which connect 88 states and governments and a population of 321 million Francophones on five continents,” she said addressing a reception of the French Embassy for International Francophonie Day. Since 2006, she noted, Cyprus has been actively participating in the actions and events to celebrate the anniversary of the establishment of the World Organization of Francophonie, expressing in every way the interest and love of the French language and culture. She also referred to the many opportunities that Cypriot pupils and students have to learn the French language and culture. The Minister said that the new government’s priority is to strengthen actions that promote multilingualism and offer the young people of Cyprus opportunities in the academic and professional sectors.
